At the
turn of the century the Sicangu people were given the ingredients
to make bread. In their creative nature, the women developed a fry
bread recipe from those ingredients. These recipes became closely
guarded secrets passed from one generation to the next. I was given
this recipe by my great-grandmother to share with future generations.
In the summer of
1993, we had the idea to package and sell this family fry bread
recipe. I remember that summer very well, as my mother and I would
hand sew and rubber stamp muslin bags stamped with SiouxFry
Bread Mix. We would then dry the bags overnight and begin
production the following day. This process went on throughout the
summer until we had enough sales to justify purchasing the muslin
bags in bulk from a bag company. Wow, what a summer!
Now, years later,
we have made the decision to carry on our traditional Native American
fry bread recipe as Little Chief Fry Bread Mix. Our small
company continues to grow, allowing us the opportunity to offer
more products. We are now offering Native American herbal teas and
green tea with more Native American specialty foods to come.
Through the years,
our family has prepared Little Chief Fry Bread in a variety of ways,
finding that it makes a great accompaniment to any meal. We encourage
you to be adventurous, trying Little Chief Fry Bread Mix in new
and different ways. Please share any new ideas with us here on
